DirtBike School
What is DirtBike School?

Covers basic operating skills and principles for negotiating the varying terrain that the sport of off-highway riding involves. Many street riders begin as dirt riders since the physical operating skills are similar, but the dirt environment is more forgiving than the street. This course is conducted entirely outdoors in an off-highway area. It is not a license waiver course.
NOTE: A minimum of 3 students is required for us to run this course. If fewer than 3 students are registered, your class may be cancelled, and you will have the opportunity to reschedule or receive a refund.
What will you learn?
Moving the Motorcycle
Motorcycle control involves learning essential techniques that ensure a safe and smooth ride. You'll develop accurate clutch and throttle usage for seamless starts and stops, enabling smooth motion when transitioning between speeds. Gain confidence in controlling the motorcycle by keeping your head and eyes up, focusing on the terrain ahead, and maintaining proper posture with your knees pressed against the tank for stability. Practice smooth brake application to enhance stopping precision while maintaining balance. These foundational skills will help you ride with greater control, safety, and ease.
Riding Posture
The essentials of motorcycle riding, including proper foot placement and correct standing posture to ensure balance and stability. Learn to keep your head and eyes up for improved awareness and navigation. Develop smooth clutch and throttle control for seamless acceleration and deceleration, while maintaining full control of your motorcycle at all times. These foundational skills will set you on the path to confident and safe riding.
Turning and Gap Selection
In this course, you'll master essential motorcycle riding techniques to enhance safety and control. You'll learn how to maintain correct riding posture for stability, look through turns to improve cornering accuracy, and shift your weight effectively for better balance. Smooth throttle control and gear shifts will help you ride more confidently, while maintaining a safe following distance ensures ample reaction time. Additionally, you'll adopt the SEE strategy—Search, Evaluate, Execute—to proactively identify and mitigate risks on the trails.
Riding Management
Explore the unique challenges of off-highway motorcycle riding by understanding the primary causes of mishaps, such as hidden obstacles, unpredictable terrain, and rider inexperience. Learn essential risk management strategies, including maintaining proper speed, reading the terrain effectively, and adapting to varying trail conditions. Additionally, gain insights into how terrain variables—like mud, sand, rocks, and water crossings—affect decision-making and require specific techniques to navigate safely and confidently.
Riding Over Obstacles
Learn the essential techniques for tackling off-road obstacles with confidence. Learn how to approach obstacles at a nearly perpendicular angle to ensure stability and control. Slow down before reaching the obstacle to allow your suspension to absorb the impact effectively. Stand on your footpegs with bent knees and elbows to maintain balance and let your body act as a natural shock absorber. Finally, unweight the front end of the motorcycle as the front wheel reaches the obstacle, helping it glide over smoothly while protecting your bike and maintaining control.
